Women’s History Month: Marsha P. Johnson
As we mark International Transgender Day of Visibility and the final day of Women’s History Month, we honor the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson; a Black transgender woman, a fierce activist, a beloved community figure, and a catalyst for LGBTQ+ liberation.
Marsha was there at the frontlines of the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. She didn’t just demand change, she embodied it, with glitter in her hair and fire in her heart. She co-founded STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to support homeless trans youth and sex workers, long before society even recognized those needs.
She lived in a world that constantly tried to erase her—but she met it with joy, resistance, and radical love.
-She stood for those most marginalized, uplifting trans people, especially those impacted by poverty, racism, and homelessness.
-She led by example, showing what activism could look like when rooted in care and community.
-She remains a symbol of strength, visibility, and the refusal to be erased.
Marsha once said, "No pride for some of us without liberation for all of us."
And today, in a time when trans people, especially Black trans women, are facing escalating violence, legal attacks, and erasure across the country, her words are more urgent than ever.
Visibility matters—but it must come with protection, celebration, and resources.
On this International Transgender Day of Visibility, and every day, we honor Marsha P. Johnson, not just as an icon of the past, but as a reminder of what it means to show up for each other now.
